Young People in Viet Nam

Selected indicators from the 2009 Population and Housing Census

In all nations, young people must be prepared to make a meaningful contribution towards achieving sustainable economic and social development. Young people who enter the labour force equipped with appropriate skills can refresh and improve the quality of their country’s human capital. In other words, young people are perhaps the most critical determinant of long-term growth and development.  For the purpose of this profile, the youth demographic is defined as the age group between 15-24 years. According to the Population and Housing Census conducted in Viet Nam in 2009, youth comprise the largest age group, accounting for 19.4 per cent of the total population of 85.79 million. They not only form the basis for demographic change but represent the future potential of the country.

Population Projections for Viet Nam 2009-2049

One of the important input information of policy making and socioeconomic planning work is future population size of the whole country and lower administrative units. Consequently, population projections are normally implemented periodically. However, population projections might also be done extraordinarily due to demands of the information users, particularly at the beginning of a new development period considered a turning-point. It is not an exception in the case of Vietnam that after each Population and Housing Census, population projections are made for many years later, serving the setting-up of long-term, medium and shortterm development programs.

The ageing population in Viet Nam: Current status, prognosis, and possible policy responses

As a result of sharp reductions in fertility and mortality as well as increased life expectancy at birth, the elderly population in Viet Nam is increasing rapidly in both absolute and relative numbers. The population projections by the General Statistics Office (GSO, 2010) show that the elderly population (persons aged 60 and over) as a percent of the total population will reach 10 percent in 2017, or the Vietnamese population will enter the so-called ”aging phase” from 2017 onward.  Similar to rapid population growth, rapid population aging creates various pressures on economic growth, as well as on the infrastructure and social protection services. This report aims to provide a comprehensive review and analysis of related issues, and provide tentative recommendations for policy responses to issues related to aging in the years to come.
